About Us

We are Viamo

With Viamo, NGOs, government agencies, donors and businesses can communicate directly with the people they intend to reach via mobile. We make your transition to digital easy.

Our Story

We believe everyone deserves access to information to be able to make well-informed decisions, large and small.

Nearly 3 billion of us remain unconnected, hard to reach by traditional media or even the internet. This means too many of us don’t get the information that helps us reach our full potential. Don’t get our voices heard. Our markets and economies developed. Viamo has found a way to change this.

We give people access to information to improve businesses, governance, health and education. And we do it in the way that suits our users best. Through voice, on their simple mobile phones, at the moment of their choosing, in their own language.

Tailored to their individual needs, with the opportunity to be heard as well. This is not a one-way street, this is a conversation.

Our human-centered design always starts from the community perspective. Out of respect for our users. Respect earns trust, and with trust comes responsibility. Being reliable matters to us.

We create scalable campaigns with immediate data feedback. For organizations that want to have a direct, positive impact. We use digital technology, data science and a sophisticated mobile platform to do it.

And we do it so all of us can thrive.

COO and Co-Founder

Louis Dorval

When Louis worked with Engineers Without Borders Canada in Ghana, he wondered how aid organizations and emerging market governments can use tech to meet the needs of people who aren’t being reached? The answer was in co-founding Viamo in 2013, using the ubiquitousness of mobile phones to create new feedback loops at scale, and empower millions of people with new access to vital information. As COO, Louis leads the company’s implementation, product, marketing, and business development teams. He has since helped grow the company to 33 countries and reached over 30 million people with hundreds of diverse services.

Louis began at Engineers Without Borders Canada where he was part of their first overseas-based staff and grew their international programs to more than 200 Africa-based employees and volunteers. He worked for a silicon-valley pre-IPO software company as their Director of Specific Projects reporting to the CEO. There, he led the corporate development team, the growth of the corporate foundation and became the founding director of their R&D labs division.

Louis has an MBA from the University of Oxford as a Skoll Scholar.

Chief Program Officer

Sally Hughes

West & Central Africa, Caribbean, South Asia

Sally leads Viamo’s programs in West & Central Africa, the Caribbean, and South Asia as the Chief Program Officer overseeing representation, operations, and program expansion. She has served on Viamo’s board of directors since 2017. She also serves as the Executive Director of Human Resources and is responsible for designing and leading activities across our offices.

Sally leads Country Managers in managing relationships with mobile network operators, designing and developing projects with partners, and growing the use of mobile tools for isolated populations.

A respected leader and experienced development professional, Sally brings a wealth of knowledge to her role. Prior to co-founding Viamo, she served at Marie Stopes International where she was instrumental in setting up country programs all over the world, including the surplus-producing Mexico City program and MSI Burkina Faso, delivering effectiveness on national health indicators within the start-up phase. She also oversaw MSI’s well-established program in Malawi, which serves 1 million clients annually with 500 employees. She later advanced to the position of Deputy Regional Director, providing strategic support to MSI programs in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Vietnam, protecting 8 million couples from unwanted pregnancies each year.

Sally holds a bachelor’s in European studies and modern languages from the University of Manchester in the UK.

CEO & Co-Founder

David McAfee

As CEO, David helped Viamo grow by leaps and bounds, leading its transformation into a platform based business model. He leads the company’s mission to bring some of the benefits of the digital economy to the unconnected or under-connected communities via the unique platform designed for simple mobile phones.

David began as a Peace Corps Volunteer in a village in Gabon, after which he served as Country Director for an American non-profit focused on public health in Rwanda, a year after the genocide. In his role, he led the implementation of private sector distribution channels and commercial marketing techniques to increase the use of public health products and services. David found the gap in providing access to life-saving and life-enhancing information and products and services for communities who were not yet online, yet had simple mobile phones and a desire to connect. From the recognition of this unmet need, David partnered with Louis Dorval and Mark Boots to co-found Viamo.

David holds a bachelor’s in economics from the University of Chicago.

Chief Program Officer

Kellen Eilerts

East & Southern Africa, Middle East & North Africa, Southeast Asia

Prior to co-founding Viamo, Kellen worked for Human Network International (HNI) first as the Country Director in Madagascar and later as the Regional Director. At Viamo, he has overseen Viamo’s expansion into new markets and led the negotiation of telecommunications relationships that now serve millions of people throughout Africa and Asia. Kellen has over 15 years of experience working in the development sector, and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in rural Senegal.

He holds a master’s in public policy and public administration from Northwestern University in Chicago and a bachelor’s in astronomy from the University of Virginia.
