The GSMA, in partnership, with Viamo has just released a case study on “Ask Viamo Anything” (AVA) assessing how voice-first Generative AI can make a difference in connecting the 3.4 billion people who still lack meaningful internet access.

The report explores the early results of our recent pilot in Zambia and what the potential of scaling up the solution across other countries could be.

Key Findings From The Recent Pilot in Zambia

  •  59% of users were female
  •  AVA users engaged 4x more than traditional automated telephone technology users
  • Users reported increased trust and accessibility for sensitive topics like health

How AVA Breaks Digital Barriers

  •  Reaching non-literate and low-connectivity users
  • Offering trusted AI-generated voice responses
  • Increasing engagement, particularly among women and first-time AI users

What Is Needed To Scale

  • Localised AI models tailored to different dialects & cultures
  • Partnerships with mobile network operators & NGOs
  • Investment in voice-data collection for underrepresented languages
