In the initial weeks of the global COVID-19 pandemic, we moved quickly to make key information from the World Health Organization available to millions of 3-2-1 Service users. This information includes an explanation of COVID-19, how it spreads, and what you can do to protect yourself. You can review the impact of our 3-2-1 Service by clicking here to see our dashboard. As of today, more than 4.9 million people have listened to over 14.1 million COVID-19 key messages.
No matter where you are in the world, you are probably well versed in much of this information (wash your hands with soap, maintain social distancing, avoid touching your face, etc.) but these messages are not enough. We need to add up-to-date, locally-relevant, information to contextualize the pandemic and to address the effects of increased stress due to these protection measures.
In countries such as Madagascar, Indonesia, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Uganda, and Nepal we are working with partners to provide daily or weekly news updates on the evolving COVID-19 pandemic via the 3-2-1 Service. This helps people access current and relevant country-specific COVID-19 information. This news is taken from reputable and popular news outlets within the country. Yesterday, over 400,000 people listened to news on the Service.
In Niger, where religious gatherings during the holy month of Ramadan are causing public health concerns, we have partnered with the MOH and Hirondelle to add four messages from religious and community leaders explaining the importance of following health measures relating to COVID-19 and why it is necessary to temporarily close mosques. This information, coming from the voices of important community and country leaders, resonates with citizens and helps increase positive behavior change.
In Nepal, Afghanistan, and the DRC we are working with partners to create mental health support information for children and adolescents related to social distancing and nationwide lockdowns. In Nepal, we adapted and translated WHO-approved messages on how to help children with stress and added messages about child protection and gender based violence. In Afghanistan and the DRC we are in the process of developing games that parents can play with their children, and messages for parents on how they can take care of their own mental health needs, as well as those of their children.
In Indonesia, we have partnered with BBC Media Action to add an entertaining,10-episode, fast-fiction audio drama series. It provides listeners with educational information on key areas of misinformation and disinformation around COVID-19, using characters and scenarios that are relatable to our audience.
