Last week we talked about how Viamo works with our partners to respond rapidly to COVID-19 by providing free access to information on our 3-2-1 Service. At this critical time, providing information can help save lives. During this pandemic, however, we also need to listen.
Viamo helps give a voice to marginalized groups by asking knowledge, attitude, behavior, and practice-related questions via automated mobile phone surveys. Respondents opt in to participate, listen to questions on their simple mobile phones, and use their telephone keypad to respond. The information we collect from vulnerable populations helps to inform our partners’ COVID-19 operations and programming and provides critical information to policy makers. The mobile phone channel may be the only way to collect this data; in this new era of “social distancing”, where in-person interviews may be impossible or unsafe.
The UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (UNRCO) in Nepal is ready to combat COVID-19 information gaps, but they first need to understand what the gaps are. They turned to Viamo to help understand where to start. Last week we conducted an automated mobile phone survey of 1,100 people in seven different provinces of Nepal.
What did we learn? Most people were aware of the novel coronavirus (83% of respondents) and felt that they knew how to protect themselves from contracting COVID-19 (71% of respondents). Perceived risk of the virus was low, only around 15% of people felt that they and their family are at risk. Currently, Nepal has only 31 confirmed cases and zero deaths. The country has been on lockdown, with international travel suspended since the 22nd of March, extended now until the end of April.
When asked what measures can be taken to protect themselves against COVID-19, the majority of respondents identified washing hands with soap and water and wearing a mask, followed by staying away from large crowds. When asked to identify the symptoms of COVID-19, cold, cough and fever, followed by difficulty in breathing, were the most common responses. Overall, 50% of respondents said they had witnessed some form of preparedness and response activities to COVID-19 in their community.
Mobile phone surveys are fast, economical, and reliable. In collaboration with our partners, Viamo designed, implemented, and collected complete responses for this survey in only 8 days. The Nepal UNRCO will use this data, disaggregated by province, to inform the next stage of their response.
In the coming weeks we have additional surveys planned with partners in other countries to measure the knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, practices, and concerns of citizens regarding COVID-19. We look forward to sharing what we learn.
