Last year Viamo engaged 11.5 million people with 67.5 million social and behavior change key messages. Behind these numbers are people like Asha, Jean-Owen, and Sarah who demonstrate how information is power.
Asha, a 44-year-old mother of six from northern Tanzania, developed fistula after the birth of her second child. Due to limited information and lack of treatment, Asha was left living in isolation. In February 2019, Asha received a text message from the 3-2-1 Service offering her free health information. After dialing in, Asha was directed to messages advising her how to receive free treatment for her fistula. She soon embarked on a 23-hour bus ride to Dar Es Salaam, where she successfully received treatment. Watch the video above to hear Asha tell her story.
Jean-Owen, a teacher from Epulu, DRC, not far from the epicenter of the Ebola crisis, began listening to messages on Viamo’s 3-2-1 Service to learn more about agriculture and health. Through the service he discovered information about the Ebola vaccine that lifted all doubts about the negative rumors he had heard surrounding the vaccine and led him to have himself and his family vaccinated. Now Jean-Owen and his family are 97.5% less likely to contract the Ebola virus.
Sarah, a 23 year old from Rwanda, suffered both physical and sexual abuse since the age of fifteen. She was sexually assaulted by her neighbour, and later, stabbed multiple times by her father. Each offender was charged with life in prison, but due to costly legal fees, Sarah’s family was unable to afford a claim for victim compensation. Through information on the 3-2-1 Service she was able to connect to support from the Legal Aid Form (LAF). LAF quickly provided Sarah with a lawyer to pursue her victim compensation claim, free of charge.
