3-2-1 Service COVID-19 Survey Reports

To help inform Viamo’s own COVID-19 response and the response of our partners, we teamed up with researchers from the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine to poll our own 3-2-1 Service callers about their knowledge of the virus and impact of COVID-19 on their livelihoods. Staff from Tulane and Viamo developed 12 separate questionnaires, each addressing a specific COVID-related topic (knowledge of COVID-19; attitudes towards the pandemic; preventive behaviors; motivation, impact on food security, income, mental health, etc.). We implemented the surveys in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nepal, Madagascar, Malawi, Rwanda, and Tanzania.
The first wave of results conducted in May 2020 involved over 1,500 respondents for each of the 12 questionnaires. The responses provide crucial data that will help inform our response and the response of our partners. They also demonstrate the value of the 3-2-1 Service to provide rapid, reliable, low-cost data on our callers’ experiences during the pandemic. We will continue to release these reports as they are finalized.

September

  • 10/10/2020: In partnership with the University of Washington, Viamo implemented a hotline for refugees in Uganda to check their possible COVID-19 symptoms. Some high-risk respondents are then tested to validate.

August

  • 08/28/2020: Viamo has developed and implemented a mobile remote training platform to help train health workers and community volunteers in World Vision’s target areas in Indonesia.
  • 08/26/2020: Viamo has signed a contract with UNICEF in Uganda to conduct two rounds of KAP surveys on COVID-19, along with providing a chatbot (Facebook and WhatsApp) and an IVR inbound hotline to strengthen and expand the U-Report tool for COVID-19 FAQs and reporting.
  • 08/17/2020: As part of GFA’s GIZ-funded TRANSFORMASI project in Indonesia, Viamo is increasing access to public services in the ‘new normal’ era of COVID-19 by providing gender-based violence response and prevention information on our 3-2-1 Service and a social media chatbot. Viamo is conducting a mobile survey on citizen expectations with regard to the ‘new normal’ era of COVID-19.
  • 08/11/2020: As part of GIZ’s MUSEFO project in Cambodia, Viamo implemented bimonthly surveys to better understand COVID-19 impact on the living conditions of the project’s beneficiaries.
  • 08/01/2020: Viamo has signed a contract with Save the Children in Afghanistan to add COVID-19 content on the 3-2-1 Service. The key messages are Kids Corner, Parents Corner, and Teachers Corner. The content is designed to help kids understand and cope with the pandemic with proper guidance given to parents and teachers.
  • 08/01/2020: Viamo is working with Palladium in Afghanistan to provide remote training to health workers on COVID-19.
  • 08/01/2020: Viamo in Afghanistan has new key messages on COVID-19 on the 3-2-1 Service in partnership with the International Rescue Committee.
  • 08/01/2020: Viamo has partnered with BBC Media Action in Afghanistan to create key messages in the News section on the 3-2-1 Service looking at the responsibilities of Religious Leaders during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • 08/01/2020: In Madagascar, Viamo and GIZ PrAda are building on their existing climate change adaptation partnership and launch and promote campaigns and edutainment dramas on the 3-2-1 Service and a national radio channel on secondary COVID-19 effects for smallholder farmers.

July

  • 07/20/2020: Viamo has partnered together with UNICEF, UNDP, and SMERU to conduct three rounds of a known number survey to assess the socioeconomic impact of COVID-19 in Indonesia
  • 07/13/2020: Viamo is adding agriculture messages on the 3-2-1 Service and designing a market linkages mobile service to assist farmers to connect with value chain actors in Indonesia under Palladium’s DFAT PRISMA (Australia-Indonesia Partnership for Promoting Rural Incomes through Support for Markets in Agriculture) project. This is under PRISMA’s COVID-19 response efforts as a result of the impact COVID-19 has had on in-person interactions between value chain actors and farmers in Indonesia.

June

  • 06/24/2020: Viamo has partnered with UNICEF to conduct three remote training curriculums for health workers and community volunteers in Papua and West Papua on COVID-19 risk communication and community engagement; infection prevention and control; and safe Puskesmas. Viamo will also design separate mobile surveys to measure training impact on health worker and volunteer knowledge and behavior change.
  • 06/23/2020: Viamo has partnered with Cowater for a COVID-19 remote training of 400 community health workers in the Boucle du Mouhoun region of Burkina Faso.
  • 06/21/2020: In partnership with Stanford, a COVID-19 remote training curriculum has been contextualized for community health workers in Burkina Faso and validated by the MoH.
  • 06/20/2020: Viamo started a large IVR campaign on COVID-19 with Breakthrough Action, targeting the capital Conakry and its surroundings in Guinea.
  • 06/15/2020: Viamo has partnered with the United Nations through WFP in Mozambique for remote training. The main target audience for this training will be non-UN staff that have a role in the delivery of the COVID-19 multisectoral response, including but not limited to health outreach workers, volunteers, community leaders, activists and protection focal points.
  • 06/12/2020: Viamo has partnered with The Accountability Lab in Nepal to address common myths and misconceptions on COVID-19 by providing COVID News messages on our 3-2-1 Service.
  • 06/10/2020: Viamo has partnered with UNICEF in Nepal to carry out a 6-month survey looking at the socio-economic impacts of COVID-19 on children and vulnerable people.
  • 06/10/2020: Viamo has partnered with IFPRI (International Food Policy Research Institute) in Nepal to send messages to farmers on how to manage the effects of Fall ArmyWorm on their crop, as they are unable to disseminate the information in person due to the COVID-19 crisis.
  • 06/01/2020: Viamo has partnered with VillageReach in Mozambique to upgrade the Ministry of Health hotline ‘’Alovida’’ using our Call Center platform.
  • 06/01/2020: Viamo has carried out rapid surveys for World Vision in Nepal to gain information on traders in order for World Vision to design their Cash and Voucher Program.
  • 06/01/2020: In partnership with Mercy Corps, a hotline with COVID-19 information was launched in Haiti.
  • 06/01/2020: In partnership with the World Bank, surveys of community leaders related to COVID-19 needs and responses will be conducted in Afghanistan.

  • 05/27/20: Viamo partnered with VillageReach in DRC to deliver the Viamo/IMA adapted and MoH approved COVID-19 remote training to an additional 15,500 Community Health Workers.
  • 05/26/20: Viamo partnered with IMA World Health to adapt the COVID-19 remote training for more than 7,500 health workers in DRC, including 850 in Kinshasa.
  • 05/20/20: Viamo partnered with Hirondelle to add a COVID-19 daily bulletin to the 3-2-1 Service in Burkina Faso.
  • 05/19/20: The 3-2-1 Service in Indonesia officially launched through a joint press release and virtual press conference from XL Axiata, the Ministry of Health, and USAID.
  • 05/18/20: COVID-19 daily news content added to the 3-2-1 Service in Nigeria.
  • 05/11/20: In collaboration with Breakthrough ACTION-Nigeria (BA-N), COVID-19 orientation was conducted for 3,000 Community Volunteers via remote training in Nigeria.
  • 05/04/20: Viamo partnered with RTI under the USAID MERIT project in Malawi for a remote training of 18,200 teachers and school section heads.
  • 05/01/20: In collaboration with a partner in Rwanda, Viamo started a messaging campaign for 20,000 project beneficiaries through pre-recorded audio messages. 

April

  • 04/30/20: Wanji Game about COVID-19 prevention launched in DRC in partnership with PVI and JHUCCP Breakthrough ACTION. We use this interactive “listen-then-choose” audio game to promote positive behavior and to test players’ current knowledge and understanding of prevention techniques.
  • 04/27/20: COVID-19 Wanji Game added to the 3-2-1 Service in Madagascar.
  • 04/24/20: Viamo partnered with World Vision in Niger to deliver COVID-19 prevention messages through communication campaigns. The messages were sent to 1,720 beneficiaries (Community leaders, monitors, etc.) in four local languages.
  • 04/24/20: In collaboration with a partner in Ethiopia, Viamo will deliver COVID-19 messages through communication campaigns. The messages will be delivered in three local languages.
  • 04/23/20: COVID-19 messages added to the 3-2-1 Service in Afghanistan.
  • 04/22/20: Viamo partnered with CARE International in Tanzania to deliver COVID-19 messages through the 3-2-1 Service, surveys, and push campaigns, and to conduct remote training.

  • 03/30/20: Viamo conducted an automated mobile phone survey of 1,100 people in seven different provinces of Nepal for the Nepal UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (UNRCO). What did we learn? Most people were aware of the novel coronavirus (83% of respondents) and felt that they knew how to protect themselves from contracting COVID-19 (71% of respondents). Perceived risk of the virus was low, only around 15% of people felt that they and their family are at risk.

  • 03/25/20: Wanji Game about COVID-19 prevention launched in Malawi in partnership with PVI. We use this interactive “listen-then-choose” audio game to promote positive behavior and to test players’ current knowledge and understanding of prevention techniques.
  • 03/25/20: Viamo began directing callers via the 3-2-1 Service in Malawi to a call center if they need more information on COVID-19. This existing call center is a partnership between the MOH, VillageReach and Viamo.
  • 03/25/20: COVID-19 messages added to the 3-2-1 Service in Rwanda.
  • 03/25/20: COVID-19 messages added to the 3-2-1 Service in Nigeria.
  • 03/23/20: COVID-19 messages added to the 3-2-1 Service in Uganda.
  • 03/23/20: Wanji Game about COVID-19 prevention launched in Uganda in partnership with PVI. We use this interactive “listen-then-choose” audio game to promote positive behavior and to test players’ current knowledge and understanding of prevention techniques.
  • 03/23/20: Viamo partnered with UNICEF in Pakistan. Awareness messages on social distancing will be sent in 60 high-risk locations using Targeted Mass Messaging (TMM), aiming to reach at least 7 million listeners. 
  • 03/23/20: Viamo partnered with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Pakistan. A series of specialized voice messages will be sent to 1.5 million citizens, identified as extremely vulnerable. We will follow up this campaign with a knowledge, attitude, and practice survey to measure impact.
  • 03/22/20: Viamo submitted a solution in German Government’s COVID-19 Hackathon #WirVsVirus and was selected among the 20 winning projects, out of 1,500 submissions.
  • 03/20/20: COVID-19 messages added to the 3-2-1 Service in Cambodia.

  • 03/17/20: Viamo is supporting USAID’s response to COVID-19 in Nigeria by pushing SMS and IVR messages to the general population in priority areas, as well as messages to health workers with Frequently Asked Questions about the virus.
